Who is behind PrimeLoans

PrimeLoans is the trading name of Prime Loans Technology (Pty) Ltd, a South African company registered in 2024 with offices in Bellville, Cape Town. Its Android app has more than 100 000 installs and a 4.1-star rating from about 245 reviews (August 2026) — a reasonable sample for a short-term lender, though reviews also mention support delays and a double debit, so keep your bank statements.

Verdict: PrimeLoans is built for urgency. If you need up to R4 000 today and can repay within two to three months, it is one of the quickest regulated options, and the eWallet payout solves the weekend problem that bank transfers have. For anything you could plan for, or amounts above R4 000 on a first loan, a cheaper instalment loan is the better choice.

What we like

  • Among the fastest payouts: 15 minutes to 2 hours on business days
  • eWallet payout arrives on weekends and after hours
  • Apps for both Android and iPhone, plus online chat
  • Repeat clients can borrow up to R8 000

What to watch out for

  • First loans are capped at R4 000
  • Short-term pricing: maximum APR of 116.06% plus initiation and service fees
  • Asks for more documents than most apps, including proof of residence
  • Mixed app reviews on customer support

Who it suits

  • Employed borrowers with an urgent need of R500 to R4 000.
  • People who need money outside banking hours and can use an eWallet.
  • Returning clients with a clean repayment record who need up to R8 000.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Anyone needing more than R4 000 on a first loan, or more than three months to repay.
  • Self-employed applicants and pensioners — third-party reviews report they are not accepted.

What the law allows on short-term loans

Loans of up to R8 000 for up to six months are short-term credit under the National Credit Act. The regulations cap what any registered lender may charge:

CostLegal maximum
Interest, first loan in a calendar year5% a month
Interest, further loans in the same year3% a month
Initiation feeR165 + 10% of the amount above R1 000, never more than R1 050 (plus VAT)
Monthly service feeR60 (plus VAT)
Credit life insurance, if the lender requires it, is capped separately. Anything in a quotation above these limits is a reason to walk away and report the lender to the NCR.

Who qualifies

  • South African citizen, 18 or older.
  • Employed, with a regular income paid into a bank account in your own name.
  • No overdue debts, and you pass the credit check and affordability assessment.
  • Not under debt review.

Your rights

  • A pre-agreement quotation with every fee and the total, before you sign.
  • Early settlement at any time; interest stops on the settlement date.
  • Complaints: PrimeLoans first (021 139 0909, support@primeloans.co.za), then the Credit Ombud (0861 66 2837) or the NCR (complaints@ncr.org.za).

Tips

  • Apply between 08:00 and 17:00 on a weekday for the fastest review.
  • If you need the money on a weekend, select the eWallet payout when you apply.
  • Upload clear, complete PDFs or photos — unreadable statements are the most common reason for delays.

If PrimeLoans declines you

A decline usually means the affordability check left too little room, or your credit report shows recent arrears. Before you apply anywhere else:

  1. Get your free credit report from TransUnion or Experian and look for errors or accounts in arrears.
  2. Wait at least a few weeks — several applications in a short time make lenders more cautious.
  3. Apply for a smaller amount, or choose a lender whose criteria fit your situation:

How to repay PrimeLoans

Your due date and the amount to pay are shown in your personal account on primeloans.co.za and in the app. PrimeLoans' "How to repay" page lists the payment options; pay on or before the due date.

Paying early

You can repay before the due date — interest stops on the day the loan is settled.

If you cannot pay on time

  • PrimeLoans has a postponement procedure ("How to postpone" on its site). Ask before the due date, and check the cost of postponing in writing.
  • Late payment can bring extra charges permitted by the National Credit Act and a negative listing with the credit bureaus.
  • If you are in financial difficulty, PrimeLoans asks you to contact it to find a solution: 021 139 0909 or the online chat.
  • Struggling with several debts? A registered debt counsellor (see ncr.org.za) can negotiate with all your creditors.
