OM Bank issues two types of Visa debit card: a virtual card that is available immediately upon account activation, and a physical card that can be collected at an Old Mutual branch. Understanding the difference between these two and knowing how to activate and use each is the starting point for getting the most out of your OM Bank account.
Virtual Debit Card — Available Immediately
The virtual OM Bank Visa debit card is generated as soon as your account is activated. It exists entirely within the OM Bank app and provides a 16-digit card number, expiry date, and CVV code — all the information required to make online purchases, set up digital wallets, and pay for streaming subscriptions, e-commerce orders, or any other card-not-present transaction.
How to access your virtual card:
- Open the OM Bank app and log in with your biometric credentials.
- Navigate to the "Card" section of the app.
- Your virtual card details (card number, expiry, CVV) are displayed on-screen. These details are dynamic for security purposes.
- Use these details to transact online or to add the card to a digital wallet such as Apple Pay or Google Pay.
What you can do with the virtual card:
- Online purchases at any South African or international Visa-accepting merchant
- In-app purchases and digital subscriptions
- Payments via Apple Pay (iPhone/Apple Watch) and Google Pay (Android)
- Person-to-person payments through the OM Bank app
Physical Debit Card — Collection at Old Mutual Branch
If you want to swipe your card at physical retail terminals, withdraw cash from ATMs, or prefer having a tangible card in your wallet, you will need to request and collect a physical Visa debit card.
How to request and collect your physical card:
- In the OM Bank app, navigate to the "Card" section and select "Request Physical Card".
- Select your preferred Old Mutual branch for collection. The app displays a list of branches near your location from the approximately 346 Old Mutual branches nationwide.
- You will receive a notification when your card is ready for collection — this typically takes a few business days.
- Visit the branch with your South African ID document to complete the collection and FICA verification if required.
- Upon collection, you will be prompted to set your card PIN at the branch or via the app.
Note: OM Bank does not currently offer home delivery of physical cards. Collection at an Old Mutual branch is the only method.
Card Activation
The virtual card is active immediately — no separate activation step is required for online use. For the physical card:
- ATM activation: Insert your physical card at any ATM, enter your chosen PIN, and the card is activated for in-store and ATM use.
- App activation: Alternatively, the OM Bank app may include a card activation function — follow the in-app prompts after collection.
Setting Your PIN
Your card PIN is set either:
- At the branch terminal during physical card collection, or
- Via the OM Bank app in the Card management section.
PIN security tips:
- Never share your PIN with anyone, including OM Bank staff.
- Do not use easily guessed PINs such as 1234 or your date of birth.
- If you suspect your PIN has been compromised, change it immediately via the app or call 0860 662265.

Freezing and Managing Your Card
You can freeze or unfreeze your OM Bank debit card instantly via the app. This is useful if:
- You have misplaced your card temporarily.
- You want to pause spending while on holiday.
- You suspect fraudulent activity on the account.
To freeze your card: Open the OM Bank app > Card section > Toggle "Freeze Card". The card is immediately declined for all new transactions while frozen. Unfreeze by toggling the setting off.

How long does it take to receive my physical card? Physical card production and delivery to the branch typically takes a few business days after you request it via the app. OM Bank will notify you via the app or SMS when the card is ready.
